on blogging
The problems with being a inconsistent blogger are many. One that I've been thinking about in conjunction with my last two posts is the degree to which this blog has generally been more of a record than a diary.
The worry I have is that when I go from record-mode to diary-mode, I am no longer leaving a trail of public-knowledge events that I might put on Facebook or tell you about in a Christmas letter. Working through complicated things by writing them down is helpful for me, and the pressure of publishing it requires me to be more careful and articulate. Journals tend to be stream of consciousness ramblings, and very rarely end in a point.
I worry, though, that using a blog that has traditionally been What I'm Doing, not How I'm Feeling, will be somehow tarnished by this shift in purpose. And when I go back to blogging once every six months (I'm sure it will happen), little blips of emotional episodes will remind me (and whoever reads this) more of how crazy I am than what was going on.
The point: if I'm going to blog about negative things, I need to blog about positive things, too, so that it's balanced in the end. But I don't need to work out positive things - I don't tend to reflect on the good, I just enjoy it. We'll see how this works out.
