Back

I'm back in Oberlin, living near the laundromat on East Lorain. The house next door has a predilection for very loud live music. So far not too problematic, especially since I keep ear plugs on my nightstand.

I live in the basement, which is only mildly dungeon-like. I have full sized windows that are at ground level. So far the worst outcome of this is when I was disturbed from cleaning my room by something bouncing off my screen. It was an adolescent squirrel, trying to get away from the three cats that were stalking it. And this was all at eye-level for me, in my half-sunken room. I was not pleased by this, just having bonded with the squirrel earlier that afternoon, so I went to my porch and hissed at the cats until the squirrel had a little more time to get away.

I am collecting stories for my job. Stories by Oberlin students, faculty, & alums. They are going to stories.oberlin.edu, which should go live here in a couple of days. I've been badgering everyone I know to write a story -- my boss wants 100 stories by Wednesday (that's in 2 days). This is not possible, but it would be really great to have 40. We'll see what happens -- it's harder to convince people to write than I expected. I finally wrote my story today, about how hard opera is and how fun Poppea was. We'll see how this all pans out.

I do miss my family, although my new housemates are a pretty ridiculous surrogate family, especially given how last-minute my housing search was. I'll be home for Thanksgiving and Christmas both, so I'm glad that I'll see everyone soon. In the spring, I'll be demanding that everyone come visit me here.

I dreamed last night that I found a place to live (with Corina, actually!) in New York, and decided to up and move. It was only after I got there that I realized that I hadn't given Ben my 2-weeks notice -- that I hadn't told anyone that I was quitting and leaving town. I felt really bad.
