Beauty

Last night during the Oberlin Symphony Orchestra Concert, on the back of my program I listed the books that I'm in the midst of.
That list, in order of start date:

The Beauty Myth, by Naomi Wolf
Beauty that must die, by Meg Quigley
The Toughest Show on Earth, by Joseph Volpe
On Beauty, by Zadie Smith

Apart from the memoir of the former General Director of the Metropolitan Opera, Joseph Volpe, everything seems to be concerned with beauty. I'm struck by how different each book is: a feminist manifesto exploring the violent use of beauty imagery in western society, a writer's diary of her middle years, and a highly praised novel. I'd like to finish all of them before the semester begins. We'll see how that goes.

I've set my computer up on my dresser, so that I have to stand up to use it. Now I'm more likely to walk away from it & go somewhere else, and my back is treated much better.

I might live with a family next year instead of in an apartment with kids my age. Goal: wash some dishes, help cart around kids in exchange for food & housing. We'll see if I can swing it.
