Just returned from Sufjan Stevens.
He played stuff from Seven Swans & Greetings from Michigan, the Great Lake State.
It was a wonderful show, & I love his music.
It was strange how little the sound differed from his album.
He had 5 people with him helping with Trumpet Vocals Glockenspiel Guitar Banjo & Bass
It was bizarre.
He doesn't strike me as a totally comfortable performer. His between-song-banter was wonderful, but he didn't connect with the audience.
Part of my being critical come from just having seen Ted Led & the Pharmacists. Ted Leo has a ridiculous stage presence & connects with his audience amazingly well.
So Sufjan Stevens is also wonderful, but it was a little like listening to the album. It'd be fun to hear him acoustically sometime.
The theme was Michigan; the name of his backup band was "The Michigan Militia Band".
They came out dressed up in uniforms of some sort, with bandanas around their necks & ballcaps on. They looked like boyscouts.
All in all a successful time, though different than expected.
